SJA Programs

Since its founding in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has clearly distinguished itself as a public service organization that boldly confronts the challenges of African Americans and, hence, all Americans.  Over the years, a wide range of programs has evolved.  In realizing its mission, Delta Sigma Theta provides an extensive array of public service initiatives through its Five Point Program Thrust, represented below.

Economic Development

“Financial Fortitude” was designed to assist sorors and their local communities in realizing the goals of personal wealth and financial security.  The Financial Fortitude Committee was established to promote financial literacy in SJA and Santa Clara County by providing financial education through workshops and seminars to chapter members and county residents.

Educational Development

We currently support two major initiatives focused on the development of our youth: IMAGES program for girls and EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence).

The IMAGES Program represents a natural outgrowth and extension for the continuation of the acclaimed Dr. Betty Shabazz Delta Academy.  It spotlights teenage girls from ages 13-18, in Santa Clara County.  IMAGES young women are identified by schools, churches, youth groups, and/or former IMAGES participants.

The IMAGES program, a community service project of the San Jose Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., centers on developing strong, confident, and respectful young ladies by striving to prepare them to take active roles in their success and in society at-large.  It serves as a motivational tool for African-American teenage girls with the ultimate goal of increasing their knowledge and awareness of issues affecting women of color today.  The objectives of the program will be accomplished through a variety of workshops that promote: Scholarship, Sisterhood, Financial Awareness, and Service.

International Awareness and Involvement

The Walk for Water event was created to bring awareness to the need and contribute toward the cause for clean and accessible drinking water internationally.  Often, women in rural areas in Kenya and Ghana have to travel 10+ miles to gain access to water.  Funds raised from the Walk for Water have aided in providing water wells in Ghana and water tanks in Kenya in addition to other initiatives focused on environmental awareness and education, health and wellness, water conservation, and hunger awareness.

Physical and Mental Health

SJA has a history of involvement in walks and runs for various local charities as well as particiaption in the nationwide 50 million pound challenge.  SJA has long believed that it is essential for your mind, body, and spirit to be in perfect harmony.  Please enjoy this newsletter from our Mind, Body and Spirit archive.

Political Awareness and Involvement

The Social Action Committee promotes community awareness and education on current social and political issues that support the sorority's national five-point programmatic thrust.  The committee advocates effective leadership and self empowerment to effect social change and public policy.
